How does Pilkington Activ™ work?
Pilkington Activ™ has an active coating chemically bonded onto its outside surface, which is designed to absorb the ultraviolet light given off by the sun. This absorption process causes a reaction on the surface of the glass, which breaks down and loosens dirt. Then, when it rains, the coating causes rain water to 'sheet' off the surface of the glass, which not only washes away the loosened particles of dirt, but also prevents the formulation of droplets, which cause streaks and make windows look
dirty.
A new and important development in the History of Glass

A
brand new version of Pilkington Activ™ has been
launched that provides a perfect solution for maintaining
a spotless appearance of conservatory roofs, whilst also
keeping the interior cooler. Developed following strong
calls to Pilkington from its customers for such a product,
Pilkington Activ™ Blue, so called because of its
attractive ice blue tint, offers the renowned self-cleaning
properties of the original product, but with the addition
of excellent solar control properties and good light
transmission.

In
addition Pilkington Activ™ Blue is available
from stock and can be processed and manufactured into
sealed units quickly and with minimal special handling
and installation requirements. It may be stored in the
same way as ordinary glass and has no limited shelf life
or requirement for edge deletion, and can be combined
in units with other glasses, such as Pilkington
K Glass™,
to provide additional performance characteristics.
Pilkington
Activ™ Blue offers a Pilkington factory
original alternative to the small number of special glasses
currently offered for use in conservatory roofs. However,
units offered with Pilkington Activ™ Blue benefit
from permanent self-cleaning and solar control properties,
rather than the limited performance provided by temporary
coatings and film applied to standard glass. Pilkington
Building Products, says that Pilkington Activ™ Blue comes purely as a result of market demand: “The
nature of Pilkington Activ™ has always made it
an ideal solution for use in roofs where the continuous
cleaning properties keep the building looking pristine
and save large sums of money for specialist cleaning
and maintenance regimes; there are highly successful
applications of this around the world, in some very prestigious
buildings.
It was a natural step therefore to produce a
product that benefited the growing conservatory
market in the
UK, to provide a product that at once provides the
important self-cleaning properties to keep
difficult-to-reach roofs
clean and free from mould and other typical organic
contamination, whilst also significantly
reducing solar gain within
the structure. Pilkington Activ™ Blue offers an
ideal, cost-effective solution for all conservatory roofs,
that is readily available and which will provide performance
for the lifetime of the conservatory itself.”
Pilkington
Activ™ is the world’s first self
cleaning glass and, three years after its launch, remains
the only dual action self cleaning glass widely available
throughout the UK. Since its launch the product has been
widely featured in the press and on television and has
been chosen by thousands of homeowners throughout the
UK, who are now enjoying windows installed with glass
that, quite literally, continually cleans itself using
a coating that is activated by daylight and rain.
