For a truly traditional design with an authentic look, this is the one to use. Just about any traditional design or feature can be recreated - incorporating the contemporary benefit of double-glazing. This is the "perfect" material for listed buildings. While it will require some periodic maintenance, modern paint finishes and stains ensure that this is increasingly less of an issue. It is now available in a variety of stains (mahogany, light oak, etc.), as well as various painted finishes (white, cream, green and brown).
For bespoke designs particularly, this will be the most expensive choice of material; but then again it will look very special. Be aware that just as with PVCu varying frame thickness' will effect the structural strength. Also check with your supplier the jointing method. Most use a traditional
"mortice and tenon" joint but other systems do exist.
Here are the names of a number of Hardwood Conservatory
suppliers - David Salisbury, Amdega (UK and USA), British
Conservatories (USA), Portland and Westview Products
(USA).
Hardwood
Conservatory - Example Installation: A cream painted hardwood conservatory
with Pilkington K Glass double-glazed sealed units throughout.
The roof featured motorised roof vents (due to their
height). The front was made with concertina type folding
doors that allowed the conservatory to open up completely
to the patio. As the conservatory and patio where sunk
from the main garden special attention to damp-roofing
the conservatory external walls was required.
Solid
Hardwood - is particularly popular for traditional
style Conservatories,
Orangeries,
Glass Lanterns & Traditional Glass Houses, especially
on listed buildings or period properties. (Grade 1 and
Grade 2 listed)
Oak
Conservatories For many Traditionalists - Nothing
is more magnificent than a solid oak conservatory,
with its beautiful mellow colour, classic grain and
sheer strength. Oak has been at the heart of British
tradition for centuries and many medieval buildings
hewed from oak stand today bearing a legacy of its
durability, beauty and timeless appeal. For more
